Artificial turf has become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking for a low-maintenance, evergreen lawn. It offers year-round beauty, reduces water consumption, and eliminates the need for mowing and fertilising. However, to ensure longevity and aesthetic appeal, it's crucial to install it correctly.
At Proterior Garden Design & Landscaping, we pride ourselves on doing things right. Follow this comprehensive guide to achieve a professional grade installation.
Materials Needed:
Artificial Turf
Geotextile Membrane
Granite Dust
Type 1 MOT
Edging Restraits
Tools:
Turf Cutter or Shovel
Rake
Plate Compactor
Utility Knife
Joining Tape and Adhesive
Step-by-Step Installation Process:
1. Planning and Preparation:
Measure the Area: Start by measuring the area where you plan to install the turf. Order slightly more turf than needed to account for trimming and errors.
Clear the Area: Remove any existing grass, roots, and debris. This can be done manually with a shovel or with a turf cutter for larger areas.
2. Install a Solid Base:
Excavation: Dig down to a depth of around 100mm. This depth will accommodate the sub-base and granite dust layers.
Sub-Base Layer: Lay down at least 75mm of Type 1 MOT and compact it firmly using a plate compactor. This ensures a stable and well-drained base.
3. Apply Granite Dust:
Granite Dust Layer: Spread 25mm of granite dust evenly over the compacted sub-base. This fine material helps to create a smooth surface for the turf. Use the plate compactor again to firm this layer.
4. Install Geotextile Membrane:
Geotextile Membrane: Lay a geotextile membrane over the granite dust. This helps to prevent weed growth and stabilises the surface.
5. Laying the Turf:
Roll Out the Turf: Unroll the artificial turf and allow it to acclimatise for a few hours. This will help reduce wrinkles and creases.
Cut to Fit: Use a utility knife to trim the turf to fit the area perfectly. Ensure the blades are sharp for clean cuts.
Joining Pieces: If you have multiple pieces, use joining tape and adhesive to secure the seams. Make sure the grass fibers are facing the same direction for a natural look.
6. Secure the Turf:
Edge Fixing: Secure the edges with ground pins or nails, ensuring the turf remains taut and smooth, either by tantalised timber or a concrete haunch.
7. Final Touches:
Brushing: Use a stiff brush to lift the turf fibers
Inspection: Check for any areas that need additional attention and make necessary adjustments.
By following these steps, you can achieve a professional grade artificial turf installation that enhances your outdoor space with minimal maintenance.
Remember, proper installation is key to enjoying the full benefits of artificial turf for years to come.
